This epic statue is located in the park called Villa Demidoff, which is only 11 km from Florence. The Colossus is known as Colosso dell’Appennino or simply Appennine Colossus. It has been guarding the pond in the park since the 16th century!
More specifically, this imressive statue has been erected in the 1580 by one of the most well-known sculptors in Italy – Giambologna. Appennine Colossus is more than a huge park decoration, this majestic sculture hides a little secret – there is a hidden room within the sculpture. It is said that his head was designed as a fireplace which, when lit, would blow smoke out of the nostrils. How awesome is that?
